Why Leaders Should TakeAnnual Vacations

When was the last time someone in the family asked about going on vacation and your reply being, They need me at work so I cant afford to go right now. They, whoever that is will always need you at work: being honest how many times is they actually you?

It is very easy to get caught up in your work and believe that its impossible to take a vacation. This is where mentoring, development and delegating will in the long run make your job easier. If you try and do everything yourself and never train or trust your team then surely you really believe that you cant leave for even a short period of time.

To share an experience of years ago, I worked 10-12 hour shifts then went home and spent another 3-4 hours following up and making notes on the business. I have always been big about developing people and was writing a daily diary of wins and losses at work. It took about 18 months with no vacation and I was worn out, kept pushing but worn out. I finally took a vacation and the team did an incredible job of which I was tremendously proud.

It was quite an eye opener of how I was so involved in my work that I put my family and myself last. The vacation time allowed me to relax and forget about work for the most part. When I returned I was full of energy and realized how I really needed to get away to keep myself mentally and physically tuned. It also helped things at home which in turn also made it easier for me to stay focused.

The greatest feeling of satisfaction overall though was the great job the team did and their big surprise they had upon my return. I am a retired U.S. Marine and they all had Marine Corps haircuts as their way of saying thank you for training and trusting us, we missed you.

It just doesnt get any better than that, dont trust me find out for yourself.
